I am not 100% satisfied with this explanation I found for the meaning of the number 88, but it is quite plausible and may be the main explanation for this number.
Many people are unaware of the natural phenomenon called ANALEMMA.
I explain.
If you take a picture of the sun, always from the same place, every day for a year, and then put those pictures together, it looks like this:

The sun makes a figure of "8" in the sky during the year.
To recap for clarity: If you choose an X spot to take a picture of the Sun per day, ALWAYS AT THE SAME TIME, and then merge all those photos into one, you will get the Sun moving in the sky this year. And the figure that the sun forms is the known figure of INFINITE, or the number 8.

If you take a picture of the moon, always in the same place, every day for a month, but with a slight time difference, and in the end put those pictures together, you get something like the following image of a Lunar Analemma:
